Activities to Get Kids Engaged with Math

Connecting classroom learnings to real-world situations is one of the hottest topics in education today. It is particularly challenging to connect classroom lessons to the real world as student and teacher success is being measured by performance on standardized exams. This is a particularly prominent challenge in teaching math, which many students believe they will never have to use in daily life. That’s why we introduce mathematics through characters embedded in a story. Using story places the problems in context and makes math come alive for young students. We included two sections of arithmetic, counting, and creative math challenges in Journey to Cloud City— here’s a preview:
